How do you feel when you are hungry?
Think about how you feel when you have missed breakfast and have to go about your day on an empty stomach. Currently over 2000 students in Dufferin are currently going to school hungry. Food and Friends helps to feed hungry children.
Many children and youth involved in our programs arrive at school without the proper nutrition to allow them to focus in class. You can help to support these children by getting involved with your local student nutrition programs.

|Volunteer type position is suitable for:||
|Duties / Roles / Activities:||
A wide range of duties are required to help maintain a student nutrition program. The following are tasks that are carried out. Choose one duty or all.
* Assist in the set-up of the breakfast, lunch or snack program facilities.
*Set up tables and chairs, buffet table or preparing bins for a snack program.
*Prepare the daily menu, this may involved chopping up fruit and vegetables, making toast and egg etc
*Provide a warm and friendly welcome to the children as they arrive at the breakfast program.
*Serve convenient and nutritious foods to children.
*Encourage children to try a variety of foods, providing appropriate portions with respect to dietary restrictions and child development
*In a snack program the server may be responsible for distributing bins to the classrooms
*Ensure the facilities are left clean and tidy which may include washing dishes/bins or loading a dishwasher, sweeping floors, wiping counters, making sure food is put away and stored properly, and putting away tables and chairs or bins.
*Complete inventory of food and supplies. Create a list of items needed considering the menu planned.
* Store all items purchased in the assigned storage area(s) – fridge, freezer, cupboards.
*Shopping for food.
*Monthly and yearly reporting.
*Fundraising and grant writing.
* Always bring a smiling face!
|Sample Tasks:||During the programs operations volunteers are encouraged to interact with the students in a fun and safe atmosphere. For many students these programs provide a healthy start to their day. What better way to start your day then to help the children of our community.|
