|Volunteer type position is suitable for:||
|Duties / Roles / Activities:||
Volunteers commit to providing one - 4 hour shift per week, with a minimum of one year commitment. Shifts run from 8:15 a.m. to Noon and 3:15 to 7:15 p.m., 7 days a week, including holidays. Staff will assist the volunteer to select the time that best suits his/her lifestyle. Volunteers are asked to communicate any vacations or absences as soon as possible to allow for coverage.
Calls are made from our office at 25 Centennial Road, Orangeville.
Volunteers work cohesively as a team with staff support from professionals who give ongoing coaching, mentoring and back-up.
All volunteers will receive 16 hours of classroom training focused on compassionate communications (active-listening, solution focused approach, empowerment), confidentiality, accessability, elder abuse awareness and prevention. You will learn about community services and resources, caregiver stress, alzheimers/dementia and other circumstances of life affecting our aging populations.
Screening requires two references and a police check for the vulnerable sector.
Volunteers will make calls out to the people we serve to give gentle reminders of medications and appointments; checking on safety and wellbeing; paying special attention to subtle changes in the person's mental and/or physical health; will report to and share with staff any concerns regarding the people we serve to ensure additional support is provided when necessary. Our Manager has often said, "If you can call my mother and check in with her offering social connection and ensuring her safety and wellbeing ... you can do this!" Join our team and support our older adults who have served us well.

Volunteers who qualify for this role will be: University & community college students; retired persons; older adults & seniors; caring people who have the time and the desire to reach out to older adults with a caring and compassionate nature and who wish to support them in maintaining their independence; offering caregivers and family members peace of mind in knowing that their loved ones are cared for and receive a daily safety/check in call from trained volunteers in the community.
