Headwaters Communities in Action (HCIA) is a citizens group that fosters leadership and action in support of a long-term vision of community well-being for the Headwaters Region. We do this by helping to inform and engage citizens about issues affecting the well-being of our community. By hosting community conversations and inviting people from different sectors and municipalities to work together, we help to coordinate effective responses to shared issues. Community priorities are measured largely by the Community Well-Being Report, and citizen feedback has translated into five foundations of a vibrant community: 1) Healthy People; 2) Dynamic Economy; 3) Sustainable Environment; 4) Vibrant Culture and 5) Engaged Citizens, all in conjunction with the community's assets. With HCIA functioning as a backbone organization, work groups and projects evolve as responses to identified priorities, where effective partnerships, champions and available funding facilitate progress. Current HCIA supported projects include: Headwaters Food and Farming Alliance (HFFA), including the Food Charter, Farm Fresh Guide, Farm to School Education Workshops and Local Food Club; Citizens of Headwaters for Active Transportation Team (CHATT), supporting work on area trails; DC Moves (supporting agencies in our human services sector); Volunteer Dufferin promoting and supporting volunteerism in Headwaters; Community Safety and Well-Being, a Dufferin County collaborative effort to improve key quality of life measures; Dufferin County Community Grants program, administering the scoring process for applicants.
